7 Reasons For Menstruation With Blood Clots

Sometimes menstruation can go down with blood clots, this situation is usually normal, since it arises due to an imbalance in the woman’s hormones. When this happens, the lining of the walls of the uterus can thicken, causing more abundant bleeding and the formation of clots that can vary between 0.5 mm to 3-4 cm.

Although the menstruation with clots is normal, in most cases it does not need treatment, however, in other cases it can be caused by some diseases such as anemia, endometriosis, myxomatosis, being very important to be attentive to the frequency with which this happens, and go to the gynecologist, if necessary, to assess the cause of the blood clots and indicate the appropriate treatment.

Main causes of menstruation with clots
Menstruation with clots is usually not to worry about and does not need treatment. However, as mentioned above, it may be a sign of inflammation or diseases, which is why, in case the woman has more than 2 menstrual cycles with clots, this can mean:

1. Deficiency of vitamins and minerals

Deficiency of vitamins and minerals that regulate the formation of clots such as vitamin C or K deficiency alters blood clotting, causing the formation of clots in menstruation.

2. Endometriosis

Endometriosis is characterized by the growth of endometrial tissue outside the uterus, which can cause heavy menstruation and clot formation. This disease, despite being more frequent in women between 30 and 40 years, can arise at any age. The treatment depends on the desire of the woman to become pregnant, which can be done with the use of drugs, hormones or surgery.

3. Other diseases that affect the endometrium

Other diseases of the endometrium such as endometrial hyperplasia which is the excessive growth of the mucosa that lines the inside of the uterus, or the appearance of cervical polyps, can cause menstruation with clots. The treatment can be done with curettage of the endometrial tissue or with the use of progesterone.

4. Myomas

The myoma is a benign tumor on the inner wall of the uterus, which usually causes symptoms such as pain in the uterus, heavy menstruation with clot formation, and bleeding outside of the menstrual period. Your treatment can be done with medications, surgery to remove the myoma or embolization of the myoma.

5. Iron-deficiency anemia

Iron-deficiency anemia can be one of the causes of menstruation with clots, since iron deficiency can alter the coagulation of the blood. In these cases, in which the anemia is confirmed, the doctor can guide the treatment that usually includes the daily use of an iron supplement and the ingestion of foods rich in iron like lentils, parsley, beans and meats.

Meet other foods rich in iron.

6. Abortion

Blood clots in menstruation may indicate a miscarriage in the first trimester of pregnancy, especially if the color is slightly yellowish or grayish.

7. After gynecological exams or delivery

Menstruation with clots can also occur after performing some gynecological exams, when complications occur in childbirth.

When menstruation comes with skin

Menstruation can also come with small pieces of skin and that does not mean that the woman had an abortion. These pieces of skin are small pieces of the woman’s own endometrium, but they are colorless. Just as blood has red cells and white cells, the endometrium can also have this color.

If the woman presents menstruation with pieces of skin in 2 cycles in a row, it is recommended to go to the gynecologist to evaluate the cause.
